The Geopark is a viable area which includes particular heritage and a strategy of development with the aim of effective support of the area.

In the second half of the 90s specialists from the Administration of the Protected Area Cerova upland, the Bükk National Park and ecologists were dealing with the particular area realizing that it is rich in geological valves and that it can be used both for scientific surveys and for educational purposes as well. The city of Fiľakovo and the Microregion Obručná took part in the developing processes.

Geologic Park localities

In 2001 a project was started within the Phare CBC Program. It was called The Geological and Educational Pathway in the Cerova upland Protected Area locality, Karancs and Medves localities.
From the year 2003 Fiľakovo is the coordinator of all developing activities together with the Hungarian partner. There were done many projects. The most successful was the project called The Novohrad Geopark. It was within the Interreg III A program. The results of these projects were used at nominal documentation for gaining the title - Unesco Geopark.
On 22nd January 2008 the Association of legal entity Geopark Novohrad - Nógrád was registered. The establishers are the Microregion Obručná and the City of Fiľakovo.
On 22nd February 2008 the administrating and supervising council was elected.
From 1st July 2008 the Geopark Novohrad - Nógrád has its own executive manager. She works in the Novohrad Tourist Information Centre in Fiľakovo.
